Did you know it is the legal duty of the premises owner or manager to ensure the safety of anyone entering the premises by supplying and maintaining the correct fire extinguishers under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and applies to almost every type of premises and has been the Law since October 2006.
Here is a quick guide on some of the most commonly used extinguishers and their differing uses:-
Class A fires (Wood, paper, material, cloth, etc)
Recommended extinguishers include water, water with additive, AFFF foam spray and ABC powder.
Class B (Flammable liquids such as petrol, spirits and diesel)
Recommended extinguishers include AFFF foam, ABC powder and CO2 ‘carbon dioxide’.
Class C (Electrical)
Recommended extinguishers include powder.
Class F (Deep fat cooking oil)
Recommended extinguisher is only the wet chemical and no other.
Signage should be used adjacent to each portable extinguisher indicating what type it is and what kind of fire it is suitable for extinguishing. As part of our annual service we will check and supply for any types of signage required on your premises.
Fire extinguishers should be properly fixed to the wall or mounted on special fire extinguishers stands.
A monthly visual inspection should be done in-house and recorded in a Fire Log Book and a competent extinguisher technician should perform a maintenance service to BS 5306 part 3 once a year, sometimes more if necessary.
We only use the best available extinguishers of the highest possible quality complete with a BSI Kite mark to BS EN3 and also a CE Mark, now a legal requirement with the “Pressure Equipment Directive”. Fire extinguishers are not only a legal requirement but should you ever experience a fire on your premises, if it was supplied by FireShield Safety Ltd it will be one of the best units available.
